Travis County Tax Office

The Travis County Tax Office collected 99% of the $6 billion owed by property taxpayers, but it is $6 million short due to delinquencies.

The county attorney’s office sued the owners of 285 accounts to start foreclosure proceedings and plans to file another 970 lawsuits to begin the foreclosure process on delinquent taxpayers.

In May, the tax office released the Top 10 Delinquent Taxpayers. Since then, most of those accounts paid.

“We do everything we can to help those with outstanding tax debt,” said Tax Assessor-Collector Bruce Elfant. “We will work with delinquent taxpayers, but they need to talk to us. The last thing we want to do is take someone’s property from them.”

The tax office sends letters and makes phone calls to the property owners in its efforts to collect overdue property taxes. When property owners do not respond to repeated attempts to contact them, the tax office must forward the accounts to the county attorney.

Property tax money funds emergency services, courts, schools, parks, and many other public services.
