Travis County Tax Office

You can renew your vehicle registration without the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles renewal notice, even if it is expired, at any of the tax office’s six locations and private title services (fees vary in private title services).

You will need:

  • Your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), or license plate number
  • Current proof of insurance (We will check it electronically but if it doesn’t show up in the state database, you will need to show your insurance card.)
  • Valid government-issued, photo identification (driver’s license, passport, military identification, etc.)
  • Proof of inspection (We will check it electronically but if it doesn’t show up in the state database, you will need to show the Vehicle Inspection Report.)
  • Cash, check, money order or credit or debit card

Note: There is a $3 flat fee for a renewal $100 or less or an additional 3% on the amount owed for registrations above $100 to use a credit or debit card. (This money pays for card fees and the vendor that processes card payments for the tax office.)

Need someone else to renew your registration for you?

Your relative, friend, co-worker or employee must bring:

  • Your Texas Department of Motor Vehicles renewal notice, Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or license plate number
  • A completed Limited Power of Attorney for Eligible Motor Vehicle Transactions form (VTR-271)
  • Proof of insurance that meets Texas’ minimum requirements
  • Two government-issued, photo identifications (such as driver’s license, passport or military identification). We need this kind of identification from the person you send to act on your behalf and we need to see a copy of your (the vehicle owner’s) government-issued, photo identification or we cannot process the renewal.
  • Payment of registration fees by cash, check, money order or credit or debit card
  • Business vehicle owners: We also need your employee’s work identification, business card or an authorized letter on company letterhead that matches the business name in the motor vehicle database.

It is also a good idea to bring proof of inspection.

Note: You will pay a $3 flat fee for a renewal $100 or less or an additional 3% on the amount owed for registration above $100 to use a credit or debit card. (This money pays for card fees and the vendor that processes card payments for the tax office.)

Don't forget: There is a $1 discount to renew online, no additional card fees and you can avoid the line at our office, which may make this method more attractive than renewing in person. . Online renewals also receive a Texas Department of Motor Vehicles emailed notification that serves as proof of registration for up to 31 days until your sticker arrives.
