Ten property owners owe Travis County over $2.5 million in late 2021 taxes after failing to respond to letters and personal phone calls from Tax Assessor-Collector Bruce Elfant to collect what they owe.
The worst thing a property owner can do is ignore their property tax bill. "All we ask at the tax office is if you cannot pay your tax bill in full, contact us, talk to us, work with us to set up a reasonable payment plan and be sure to make your tax payments in a timely manner," Elfant said. "Why take the risk of losing your property because of unpaid taxes?"
These property owners, predominantly commercial property owners, received their tax bills in November 2021, did not make a payment by the Jan. 31 deadline and either did not set up a payment plan or make their agreed upon payments after multiple letters and phone calls.
Failure to pay property taxes can result in a lawsuit where Travis County seizes the property and auctions it off for unpaid taxes. Currently, the tax office is preparing more than 100 lawsuits against property owners for nonpayment of taxes.
The county and the other 141 government entities it collects for count on tax money to pay for services, such as law enforcement, the courthouse, emergency services, parks, road care and public schools. When projected property tax revenue falls short, programs can be cut, or property taxes raised to make up the difference.
The tax office has collected almost 99% of the 2021 property taxes owed but needs to collect another $67.7 million in outstanding 2021 debt from property owners.
Homeowners financially impacted by the pandemic and unable to pay their property taxes may qualify for a federal program that can help pay delinquent taxes. The federal program is being administered by the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs. Visit the agency website, www.TexasHomeownerAssistance.com, to find out what is required to qualify for financial relief.
