Ten property owners owe almost $1.4 million in 2018 taxes and have failed to contact the Travis County Tax Office about when or how they plan to pay.
“They have ignored our letters and my personal phone calls in our attempts to collect,” said Bruce Elfant, the tax assessor-collector. “So today, I am releasing the list of the Top 10 Delinquent Taxpayers.”
These property owners, who mostly own commercial properties, received their tax bills in October 2018, ignored making a payment by the Feb. 1, 2019, deadline and failed to set up a payment plan.
The worst thing a property owner can do is ignore their property tax bill. "All we ask at the tax office is if you cannot pay your tax bill in full, contact us, talk to us and work with us to set up a reasonable payment plan," Elfant said. "Why take the risk of losing your property because of unpaid taxes?"
Failure to pay property taxes can result in a lawsuit where Travis County seizes the property and auctions it off for unpaid taxes. Currently, the tax office is preparing more than 100 lawsuits against property owners for nonpayment of taxes.
The county and the other 132 government entities it collects for count on tax money to pay for services, such as law enforcement, the courthouse, emergency services, parks, road care and public schools. When projected property tax revenue falls short, programs can be cut or property taxes raised to make up the difference.
The tax office collected almost 99 percent of the 2018 property taxes owed, but needs to collect another $54.8 million in outstanding debt from property owners.
