AUSTIN, TX – Tuesday, Sept. 15 is National Voter Registration Day, and the Travis County Tax Office is urging voters to register to vote at their current address by the Monday, Oct. 5 deadline.
“If you are new to Texas, have moved within the state, or are turning 18 in time for the election, it’s easy to join the celebration by filling out a new application or changing your address online,” said Celia Israel, Travis County Tax Assessor-Collector and Voter Registrar. “Don’t wait until the very last day.”
Voters are encouraged to check their voter registration status to ensure they are registered at their current address by visiting VoteTexas.gov.
Voters registered with their current name and address are ready for Election Day, even if their record says “suspense”. Voters who are registered but need to update their name or address can complete the process online at VoteTexas.gov.
“You may be seeing alarming social media posts claiming that suspense voters are being removed from the rolls, but that simply isn’t true,” said Israel. “A suspense status means we need more information about your address. If your address is correct on your voter registration record, just go vote! If your address is outdated, now is the time to correct it before the deadline.”
Voters registering for the first time can register in person during normal business hours at any Travis County Tax Office location. Each location has a drop box outside for voters who have already filled out an application and would like to skip the line or arrive after the offices close. Applications are also available at local post offices and libraries.
The Travis County Commissioners Court is scheduled to recognize National Voter Registration Day during its voting session Tuesday, Sept. 15, in the Commissioners Courtroom at 700 Lavaca St., first floor.
Travis County Volunteer Deputy Registrars will register voters in person from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Austin Community College Highland Campus.
