On March 25, 2025, President Trump issued the Executive Order, Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections, requiring documentary proof of citizenship for voter registration in federal elections. Travis County Tax Assessor-Collector and Voter Registrar Celia Israel has issued the following statement:
“The American public has been lied to regarding the suggestion that widespread voter fraud and noncitizen voting is infecting our elections. Studies, courts, and government investigations agree; this is rare and not a widespread issue. Protecting the freedom to vote, however, is core to what it means to be American and must always be pursued.
“Online voter registration is the best way to ensure we have the most accurate database for eligible voters to participate in our elections. It saves money and time. Online voter registration would make our elections even more safe and secure. It is good policy. Texas is one of the only remaining states in the nation without online voter registration. I hope my former colleagues in the Texas Legislature can pass this thoughtful and sound policy once and for all.”
